Zakiya is an award-winning journalist who cut her teeth in audio storytelling as a radio producer and reporter. After interning at StoryCorps and working as a national facilitator, traveling the country collecting stories of everyday people, she became an Associate Producer for Peabody Award-winning NPR’s Latino USA where she reported and produced a range of stories, from the Black Lives Matter movement in Brazil to the 2016 Presidential election to Fashion Week. She also contributed to the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative, limited series Suave. She was also an Associate Producer for Gimlet’s Every Little Thing. She then became a Senior Producer and Host for Kickstarter’s podcast Just the Beginning, collaborating with a small team to create the podcast from the ground up—from conceptualization to reporting and producing to scripting and hosting. Zakiya went on to be a Producer for WNYC’s critically acclaimed podcast Nancy where she reported and produced stories about gay ghosts, how the Covid-19 lockdown affected queer communities, and more. Zakiya was also a Senior Producer and Editor for Audible, collaborating closely with actress Elizabeth Banks to develop and produce “My Body My Podcast”, named one of Audible’s best podcasts of 2021.
